Man is the being by whom nothing comes into the world says Jean Paul Sartre. Consciousness is not this or that object, it not any object at all, but surely it is itself? No, says Sartre, that is precisely what it is not. Consciousness is never identical with itself. Thus, when I reflect upon myself, the self that is reflected is other than the self that reflects. When I try to state what I am, I fail, because while I am speaking, what I am talking about slips away into the past and become what I was. I am my past and my future and yet I am not.
