Manfred Spritzer, a German neuroscientist and professor, drops a lot of knowledge bombs in this interview, especially about kids, learning, and the dangers of digital media on developing brains. Some quotes below: Its almost a crime to put a baby in front of an Ipad. Fear shuts down creative thoughts. If you want to teach somebody something that the person will be able to use creatively later on, you must not use anxiety or fear in training. Because if you learn something under fear, you basically save the fear with the input and you will not be able to use that input creatively. On Google and computers in school: The more you know the better you are able to use google. Otherwise you cant distinguish the wheat from the chaff. Theres a paper out that says if you use google for knowledge, you wont remember it. Because your brain says Oh I can google that. Theres little incentive to memorize/retain. Question: What age would you allow computers in school? Well, 18 would be the safe side. There is absolutely no evidence that computers do any good to the education of kids. Theres risks and side-effects (to using computers too much) with adolescents and kids. And these risks and side-effects are huge. On aging gracefully and retaining your mental faculties: We need that mental training when we are young, to avoid dementia in old age. A second-language can give you five years extra life if you get Alzheimers. How can we keep our brains healthy? Be together. Loneliness is the major killer. Be together, old and young together. Thats really what helps you a lot. Not crossword puzzles, or sudoku. Get a grandchild or a young kid. https://youtube/watch?v=4Ueg55KUQa0&feature=youtu.be
