#Mangroves provide ecosystem services worth around US$33 - 57,000 per hectare per year, sequester vast amounts of carbon - about 1,000 tonnes per hectare, and yet they are being destroyed at a rate 3 - 5 times greater than the average rates of forest loss, according to a new report by UNEP. With 90% of the worlds mangroves found in developing countries, the protection and sustainable use of mangroves is critical. As just one example, 30% of the total fisheries catch in Southeast Asia is mangrove-dependent.
