Many conservative Christians correctly point out many intrusions of govt as affronts to our liberty, but then they turn around and support other intrusions that would infringe the liberties of some just because they have a different lifestyle. I hope you can see the disconnect there. Perhaps a refresher is needed. There are many EXPECTED rules and behaviors in our society, but there are only 5 Self-Evident Truths that our founders officially built the country on [editorial comments being mine, of course]: 1 – All men [good ones AND bad ones, traditional AND progressive, by the way] are created equal [politically equal that is, meaning that no family/class is destined to rule over others] 2 – They are endowed by their creator [not by their rulers] with certain inalienable [since the rulers didn’t give them, they can’t take them away] rights 3 – Among these [there are more than these, but here is a basic grouping] are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness [e.g. doing whatever one wants with his life, liberty and property that doesn’t infringe on others rights] 4 - To secure these rights [notice it DOESN’T say “to enforce these responsibilities/mores/societal expectations” (would you really want to create a govt body to enforce your responsibilities? Heaven forbid!)] governments are instituted among men [there you have the self-evident purpose of govt], deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed [now, would it make sense for people to consent to govt agencies designed to restrict their pursuit of happiness instead of guard it? Of course not, but more importantly, there is to be NO infringing of inalienable rights] 5 – Whenever any form of govt becomes destructive of these ends [destroying our rights instead of securing them – such as what we have going on everywhere today], it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it [we should probably have more of this], and to institute new govt, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness This is American liberty as the founders designed it, and as it should be. There might be many reforms needed in society, but govt is not to be the agent of change. It’s already doing more than it is supposed to [becoming the welfare/warfare/police/ manage the economy state], and has pretty much ruined us already. And what it is supposed to do, it doesn’t do very well. So why keep asking it to do more than it is incapable of? It’s time to get all these social issues out of the realm of politics and the force of govt. The conservative’s mandate to his representatives should become: Secure our rights, nothing less, and nothing more.
