Many enjoying the slopes despite lack of snow fall GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – There may not be any snow on the ground in much of western Massachusetts, but that isn’t stopping people from hitting the slopes in Franklin County. Berkshire East Ski Area told 22News business has been good this season with people coming from all over New England to Charlemont for their favorite winter sports. Berkshire East said they had their earliest opening date ever this season on November 28th, because of the Thanksgiving snow storm. Though you wouldn’t be able to find snow on the ground in much of western Mass., Berkshire East Ski Area uses a snow gun to produce man-made snow. According to John Schaefer of the Berkshire East Ski Area, “The truth is, though, modern snow making technology makes unbelievable snow and in a wide range of temps and if we’re able to get cold, clear weather we can make a ton of snow.” The snow guns run for most of the night when it’s cold, so the next day there’s plenty of snow on the ground. While some come to train, others come to carry on a tradition of hitting the slopes with friends and family during the holiday week in New England. Many skiers said it just feels right to be skiing around this time of year, especially in western Mass.
