Many, many people who have adopted dogs from us tell us how special these dogs are. We think all dogs are very special but admit there is something extraordinary about rez dogs. Although most dogs on the Pine Ridge Reservation are free-roaming, i.e., they are not confined to back yards, there are very few true strays. Most free-roaming dogs know exactly where they live, who their family members are (both furry and non) and even who their most distant relatives are. They sometimes go down the road to visit, go to the creek for water, go off hunting for a meal, follow their people family to the post office or store (waiting patiently outside for them), go to school and wait outside for their favorite friend to get out of class, sit on top of parked cars, and sometimes get into trouble like when they harass a porcupine! Most rez dogs have never walked on a leash but follow their people family wherever they go. They wait patiently for their dinner which is usually much more interesting than dog kibble, consisting of table scraps, slop and other goodies. True, sometimes they go hungry and sometimes they go cold but they never give up on us. They consider us their best friends. Thank you Lakota sunkas and sunkas all over this wide world!
