Many of my Mormon friends reacted when I wrote that they are mindless robots whose tendency is to obey Mormon rules without question. I believe I may have been too harsh and may not have minced my words such that I appeared to be so angry with the Mormons. I am not. Most of them are still my cherished friends though I beg to disagree on many things that they believe in. I will rephrase what I have said.. What I should have written and what I really meant was that Mormonism tends to make one a mindless robot. This is the truth. Mormon authorities exact and expect COMPLETE AND UNQUESTIONING OBEDIENCE from their members. They won’t settle for anything less. For many, many years as a Mormon, I have often times forced myself to stay mute in order to be in accord with the church authorities. Questioning doctrine is a serious matter. Let us take as an example the doctrine of eternal progression which is rarely taken up or discussed in auxiliary classes like priesthood or Sunday school. Observe the reaction of the teacher when you pop up these few questions about the doctrine: -The doctrine of eternal progression is about Mormons becoming Gods, isn’t it? (The eyebrows of the teacher will begin to rise as the other members stare at you in disbelief) -What makes you think that we can become Gods? (The teacher will begin to parry your questions by saying- you are meandering from our lesson, brother. Let’s stick to the manual, shall we?) But you continue. -Can you give me scriptural evidence that this doctrine was taught by the primitive church that Jesus built? (Perhaps the teacher will try to give some vague answers, having no scriptures to back the doctrine up. The teacher will then continue with the lesson and try to ignore you) So you persist. -The scripture says that man was created lower than the angels, is it not? Then why can’t they become Gods too? (The teacher now shows signs of agitation and will perhaps say: You are treading on forbidden grounds brother. That is already “deep doctrine” which should not be discussed in this class) -Then the final blow: How do you interpret Isaiah 43:10 which says, before me no God was formed and neither shall there be after me? ( It may abruptly end the class with the teacher walking out and heading to the office of the branch president) I am 100 per cent sure that after the class you will be invited to the office of either the branch president or district president to be warned. “Brother, we are here to protect the integrity of the church and its teachings. To question these teachings is to question authority and to question authority is to question the Lord. If you persist in asking similar questions, you shall be released of all callings and may have to “explain yourself” in a church court. (Which of course always ends in being disfellowshipped or excommunicated.)
