Many of us would find our sense of rectitude vindicated by the bold men & women of #Niyamgiri region. I, however, have a feeling of unease. What will happen if this approach is applied universally? Natural assets are for everyone and should have the most judicious use for the benefit of the country. It may not perhaps be correct to hold a view that a corporate house is the sole enemy of our environment. Let us look at the defiling of the Chika lake; at the ignominy which Puri beach has been subjected to; at the mutilation of the mighty Mahanadi between Jobra and Bidanasi in Cuttack; at the unabated discharge of untreated sewage into the Kathajodi River just at the entrance to the city of Cuttack; at the cesspools and filth on the Badadanda of Puri. Can we ever dream of speed-boating the entire stretch of the Chilka lake? The merchants of plunder are recklessly destroying the majesty of the lake for prawn farming. The beach at Puri is now a filthy market. The vast expanse of blue water behind the Jobra anicut is being defiled by mindless constructions including a grotesque pipeline. Polluters & plunderers are multiplying and need firm handling. It may not be correct to release our anger only against corporate greed and condone other polluters and plunderers. We have to appreciate that great industrial development can also happen without harming our environment and local population. We tend to romanticise deprivation rather liberally.
