Many of you know what a rocky road it has been training Folly to herd. At times ... well, most of the time ... her gung-ho yeha attitude has been challenging. And my handling skills fall at best into the needs improvement category. Just because her mother has her HC, Daddy has herding titles, and Folly showed the most instinct of all the pups in the litter does not mean she comes pre-programmed. In fact, being pick herding pup just adds to the pressure with high expectations. But in yesterdays lesson I got a glimpse of what the finished product will look like, and it was so exciting. We were working ducks and using the fence as a crutch to get her to hold the pressure at balance. The ducks came to a corner, and instead of the ducks balling up and sticking in the corner as they usually do, with Folly blasting through them, she slowed down, dropped her outside shoulder and head, and pointed her nose at the tiny gap between the ducks and the fence to scoop them nicely around the corner. She did look a lot like her mama at that moment. And the Moments of Naughtiness are getting fewer and farther apart. There is light at the end of the tunnel!
