Many people affected by the great Tsunami in northern Japan in March 2011 still live in more than 50,000 temporary houses in nearly 1000 temporary villages or communities. Most of them are still not sure when they can get out of the make-shift houses to move to a real home. Priorities: Hope (assurance of when they can move out), job, and community (friends). One volunteer here in Ishinomaki said, “Many people don’t feel like working again. We offer them jobs but they don’t seem to be interested in it. They lost their home, loved ones, and jobs all at the same time. They seem to have also lost their will to live.” Well, at least we can do some things in our limited capacity to be with them. I am in 3 of the most tsunami-damaged areas, doing magic shows at temporary houses.
