Many people are flocking to #Ello in hopes that it will not be as - TopicsExpress

Many people are flocking to #Ello in hopes that it will not be as douchey as Facebook, in many ways. The need for an alternative was again recently driven home to me with the Real Names policy controversy; my hope is that Ello will be a social media platform which not discriminate against and or endanger the safety of many of its users by implementing a Real Name policy. So far from how Ello has described its principles, they seem to allow room for people to portray themselves with a name other than their legal name. From their Rules page: Don’t impersonate others. Be yourself, or a version of yourself. In response to the article below, another commenter pointed out that while they dont have many features that enable people to protect their privacy right now, keep in mind that they are still in Beta, and they just sent an email to their users yesterday indicating that more privacy features are in the works: You will have the ability to block specific users from looking at your Ello feed and profile, and from commenting on your posts. We’re also adding a simple way to report uncool behavior. I also gave Ello direct feedback that I applaud their non-Real Names policy, and encourage them to continue to consider in all of their policies and actions, how they can enable their users to protect their privacy as it has real-world safety implications for some. I encourage others to do the same if you agree. Lets keep the pressure on them with constructive criticism to make sure that they become the alternative to Facebook that weve been looking for!
