Many people have issues with dogs left alone while at work or school all day, especially puppies (any dog under a year is a puppy). This is one of the #1 complaints we hear. The dogs escape their crate and destroy the house or room. Here are some thoughts and ideas to help : - if you can do doggy day care that would be the best! He is still a little guy and needs time and attention. Just like you wouldnt leave a preschooler alone in a playpen all day. A puppy needs more than an older dog might. - put some of his toys or a blanket/towel etc in your dirty clothes basket. Leave there all night, then put in crate. (Be sure your dog is not going to EAT These items while alone in the crate.) -Short crating times. Try crating for very short periods at first and get longer gradually. -EXERCISE! Lots and lots of it. If he is crated all day, he needs a lot of play time when you get home. Imagine if you as a kid had to stay in a crib all day and then all night with just some time out when folks were home... puppies get bored, lonely, and scared you will never come back, some say :) -Mental exercise too! Training time can be as good as physical exercise. Teach a new trick each day. Reinforce the old tricks. There are lots of Google sites with info on how to get started training your dog. -Busy toys! Dont just feed him. .. put his food in a busy box or Kong food ball. (Maybe in the crate?) The big pet stores sell lots of busy toys. They dont have to have special treats, their regular food should be inspiration enough to solve the puzzles. (Make sure it is appropriate for your dogs age and size) -Socialize socialize socialize! Try to have your puppy meet a new person everyday. Make sure these are positive experiences. Going to a new place every week is a good plan too. Even if just along for the ride to the bank drive through, or on short errands. REMEMBER: Dogs are very intelligent, social creatures much like us. We need to try and see life from their perspective sometimes. :)
