Many residents from the Carle Place/Westbury community have expressed concerns about Nassau OTBs proposal to install Video Lottery Terminals at the former Fortunoff site in the Source Mall. These concerns include the potential for increased traffic and crime, as well as the impact on safety, quality of life, and home values. I share these concerns and stand with the Carle Place/Westbury community. The lack of information being provided by OTB is troubling. Residents of the Carle Place/Westbury community have the right to know the details of this proposal and the impacts to the community. I have already contacted OTB to express these concerns and asked OTB to provide information about the following: • How exactly OTB envisions utilizing the space; • How will the proposed facility differ, if at all, from a traditional casino; • The number and demographics of people OTB believes this facility will attract on a daily basis and the hours of operation; • Whether OTB has undertaken a traffic study to determine what the impacts would be in the area, especially given its proximity to residential homes and the already significant congestion on Old Country Road; • What security measures OTB plans to take on and around the site, including partnering with the Nassau County Police Department, to address community concerns as to crime; and • What steps OTB is taking to solicit community feedback and mitigate concerns raised by residents, and when/if it will be holding public meetings. Additionally, I have asked OTB to provide this information publicly to Carle Place/Westbury residents. I believe we need to have as much information as possible about this proposal so that we can respond appropriately and effectively. Rest assured that I will continue to work with other elected officials and community leaders to this end.
