Many school buildings destroyed by floods Annual exams may be postponed Rouf banday reports Srinagar: The ravaged floods have almost parlayed the educational sector in the Valley, with most of the educational institutions still submerged in water. The recent floods not only washed away the residential and commercial buildings in the City and other parts but also brought huge damage to educational institutions. With many parts of city and south Kashmir still struggling to get out from the flood miseries, the opening up of educational institutions in these areas at this time seems an uphill task for authorities. “Many schools and college buildings are under water and many have collapsed. So it will take time to bring on track the whole system,” said one of the observer. Besides damage to the infrastructure, the floods washed away records, certificates and other necessary items thus further aggravating the situation. “Two storeys of school building were under flood waters for a week. I think whole school records will be gone,” said Deeba Hassan, a teacher by profession. Noted private institutions of the Srinagar city which include Burn Hall, Tyndale Biscoe & Mallinson, Presentation Convent, Iqbal memorial and many more are still under water. Government institutions like SP School and College, Women’s College, Kothi Bagh and others also submerged in water. “We are concerned about the future of our kids. Everything was taken away by the floods waters including books. How will they study and pass their board exams,” said Majeed Ahmad, whose son is pursuing studies in Burn Hall School. It is worth to mention that the 10th and 12th class Board exams where scheduled to be held in the month of October but were later postponed by the Board in wake of the fresh floods. “Though exams were postponed for some time but in one month are two new dates will be declared? Our kids have to start from beginning. Notes, books other material is gone. Will they will be able to cover up the syllabus in this short time,” said Shaista Farooq, a parent. While the parents are worried about their kids, the students who were going to appear in board exams are skeptical too. They too fear whether they will be able to cope up with the stress of exam. “I don’t know what to do. Everything is gone; I am in a state of shock after watching this whole devastation. Somehow we managed to save our lives and were fled to relief camp. Studying for exam at this moment is far from my mind this time,” said Rahila Akhter, who is 12th class student. Not only secondary school exams where postponed, but the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service commission also postponed all departmental & competitive examinations that were scheduled to be held in the month of September & October. “All departmental & competitive examinations that were scheduled to be held in the month of September & October are hereby postponed till further notice,” reads the official notification of the JKPSC.
