Many things have been said about the tentative visit of Former President, and eventually the comments have led to the market issue now. It is understand that the Goroka Market Development (Upgrading) Project has been in place for some time now. No significant development progress has been made so far, and months have passed. What is happening? Is it politically motivated? Who knows…..! Our mothers, who have been working so tirelessly to produce first-rate and quality produce have so long being marketing (their produce) on the “black” mud. This is absolutely, unacceptable and is a health hazard for everyone. The Goroka Market is in great need for development. Our mothers and sisters need a clean environment to sit, relax and do their marketing. On the other hand, those collecting so-call “taxes” at the gates (whether the LOs or Urban Council) must try to take ownership and initiative to make the market a better place for everyone to enjoy. We can point fingers to those who are marketing. I believe there must be a Health and Safety Committee within the “Tax Collectors” to oversee the day-to-day operations of the market relating to health and hygiene. This means, market must be clean at the end of the day (everyday), refill potholes that collects water, or fill in gravels along pathways, and mend the fence to keep out pigs. In the meantime, these “Tax Collectors” can manage while waiting for the development to take effect. For so long, we have been depending on the government funding, and that has made us become “givim moni na bai mi mekim” attitudes. It’s about time we take self-serve initiatives and stop expecting others to get the job done. Unless the “Tax Collectors become proactive and assist in looking after the market, our mothers will still be marketing in the mud…. Tru Ave!
