Many will find the link on the AHA Facebook page to an article on Newcastle lockout laws to be interesting. Information flow into our office indicates that the Sydney CBD live scene is in a state of somewhat confused direction. Lock out came in just in time for Winter and the start of the NRL season, both of which are responsible for wiping out shifts/gig listings. While some venues reacted immediately and cancelled live entertainment they are now putting their toes in the water again. Others are now cancelling bands and running DJs (sometimes with percussion players) to try and cover their requirements and still maintain revenue. Some other venues have experienced healthier mid week nights (only one of two in reality). Our assessment was that there would be a major impact from the lockout laws as the market would be without defined patron targeting for some time, perhaps until the October long weekend (warmer months, daylight saving, habits of patrons adapting). Were still hopeful. (Only concern is if there is a geographic extension, or Sydney wide. Submissions to NSW government closed last Friday on the laws effectiveness. The scope of the enquiry did not have a focus on the commercial impact). As this story highlights there is a costly impact on those at the coal face of the hospitality industry...
