Many years ago, I taught 6th grade at a Catholic school in Norwood. One day, as I sat in the teachers room, the 4th grade teachers were discussing grades for different children in the class, and I remember, remarking on a childs name, for in all my years, I had never known a child named Dewey. He was never to be in my sixth grade class, and it took about 13 years till I would meet him. I would see him perform a time or two, but I never really knew him until he created a program called Outreach. Its basic purpose was to take the talent of Summer Stage and reach out to Nursing homes and schools for special needs children. I still remember it as the most hectic, crazy, fun-filled time in my introduction to being a mother of a performer. I got to really know people like Kathy Moscotti, Karin Stevens, and Eileen Thompson (mother to Eric and Mark). I love Shooting Stars, I adored Outreach. We were somewhat of a ragamuffin bunch, and after two crazy years, it was decided that Outreach would become the Shooting Stars, where anyone who knows Harry Dietzler would know the ragamuffinwas left behind :(. That wonderful time etched a very special place in my heart for Dewey Oriente, a very talented, creative, and gentle man, who recently won a Barney for his role in The Producers There are still some Christmas songs, I hear that make me think of Outreach and Saturdays in December. Tonight he and Tony Cassidy prepared for us an Italian meal complete with wine and goodies.( I think this time the Paxsons had gravy and not sauce.) If you know Dewey, this may not surprise you but he included the full menu of the meal totally in Italian. Luckily this Irish girl took 4 years of Latin in high school and managed to figure out a bit of it. Luckily you dont have to read it to eat it. He told my daughter Joelle when he handed her the meal, that dinner should be an adventure, and it was. So with an afternoon full of musical theater, time spent with my Bob, and an adventurous dinner, my day was full of sunshine. Thank you so much Tony and Dewey for your generosity and kindness. I hope your rehearsal went well.
