Marc Hutchison asked what other Lovecraft film adaptations I would suggest - since he liked Die Farbe. In my opinion the best Lovecraft adaptations are: The Resurrected (1991) - Dan OBannon. Probably the biggest-budget HPL film yet. Its The Case of Charles Dexter Ward and is surprisingly true to the story. It knows, for instance, that the tale is NOT about spiritual possession or past lives. Dagon (2001) - Stuart Gordon. Despite the title, its The Shadow Over Innsmouth. It gets the chase scene in the middle of the story exactly right. Dreams in the Witch-House (2005) - Stuart Gordon. Far from perfect, but it gets a lot of bits right. Sadly they do not quite pull off the Brown Jenkin effect, but hey, at least it gets the geometry part right. The Call of Cthulhu (2005) - Andrew Leman. Its less than 50 minutes long, and is a silent movie(!) The idea is that it is filmed as if twas 1927, when the story was written. I loved it so much I became an executive producer to these guys next movie. The Whisperer in Darkness (2011) - Sean Branney. This is the one on which I am credited as executive producer. Note that I had absolutely no creative input into the film, nor did I ask for any. Good stuff. Filmed as if twas 1931, when the story was written. People may ask where are From Beyond and Re-Animator?! Well, I adore those films, but they are more inspired by HPL rather than true adaptations. And if youre going for the inspired vibe other films start to make the list - such as the terrific AM 1200 short film.
