Marine Connection commented on a link. 1 hr · Launching the Virgin Pledge - more a whisper than a roar for dolphins After meeting with leading experts specialising in the effect captivity has on cetaceans and to discuss issues surrounding their welfare, Virgin boss Richard Branson, pledged to release a statement on the company’s future stance on promoting/selling to facilities which hold captive dolphins and whales. Today Virgin has released their much anticipated pledge. Marine Connection welcomes any effort made to stop whales and dolphins being held in captivity however we feel that this initiative by Virgin does not go as far a step as was hoped. As a popular brand, universally recognised as being at the forefront of current trends, Virgin are in the unique position to make a definite and lasting move to implement change by telling their customers that these animals do not belong in captivity. Virgin has pledged to cease working with suppliers who take dolphins or whales from the wild in the future - but what about the immediate future? Public opinion has recently turned against keeping these sentient mammals in captivity; a fact supported by the popularity of the movie Blackfish and the downturn in stocks in SeaWorld, therefore it would have been of great support to have taken this pledge one stage further and actually stop selling to at least one facility now. Marine Connection would suggest that, to support this pledge, Virgin considers ending their promotion and sales to just one facility with immediate effect, Atlantis, the Palm in Dubai. This facility is known to be stocked with dolphins captured from the wild in the Solomon Islands - the very thing that Mr Branson states that he and his company aim to stop. So, what about it Sir Richard Branson, would you consider taking what would be this one small step for Virgin but a huge step to help end the suffering of dolphins and whales in captivity in Dubai, which once lived wild and free in the oceans, just like the dolphins around Necker Island? https://facebook/165471010204959/photos/a.325621830856542.75886.165471010204959/70883378
