Mariners lose 6-5 to the Los Angeles Angels drop to 52-46. Rodney, Mariners unable to hold lead in rubber match ANAHEIM -- Because of their depleted bullpen, the Mariners had to ask All-Star closer Fernando Rodney to get five outs in his bid for career save No. 200 Sunday afternoon at Angel Stadium. He wasnt up to the task, as the Angels scored twice in the ninth to win the game, 6-5, and take two of three in the series. Grant Greens two-out single scored Josh Hamilton with the winning run, which came after Albert Pujols had doubled home Mike Trout to get the Angels even. Yoervis Medina, who had pitched in the series first two games, came on for the Mariners in the seventh. After he struck out Kole Calhoun, Trout singled, and Pujols was hit by a pitch. Medina struck out Hamilton, but Howie Kendricks two-out single to center cut the Angels deficit to 5-4. It was the first run allowed by Medina in his past 21 games. Medina averted further damage, though, and left-hander Joe Beimel retired one of two batters he faced in the eighth before Rodney was summoned. With the Mariners bullpen having pitched in 14 of the the 28 innings the past two nights, starter Chris Young needed to get as deep into the game as possible. He gave up 10 hits, all in the first five innings, but lasted through six on 99 pitches -- thanks in large part to issuing no walks. Young struck out seven, just one below his season high (July 2, at the Astros). Mike Zunino, snapping a 0-for-25 streak, doubled to left-center in the seventh off Tyler Skaggs to score pinch-runner James Jones from second and give the Mariners a 4-3 lead. Endy Chavez made it 5-3 with a two-out RBI single that chased Skaggs. The Angels left-hander had rebounded nicely from giving up three runs in the first. Skaggs allowed only one baserunner in innings 2-6. But he issued his only walk, to Corey Hart, leading off the seventh, and that led to the tiebreaking run. Skaggs struck out five. Back-to-back home runs by Calhoun (his 11th) and Trout (23rd) got the Angels even at 3 in the third. Calhoun hit an 0-1 slider from Young, while Trout connected on an 0-1 fastball that was clocked at 84 mph. In the bottom of the first, Hamiltons two-out double scored Calhoun from first base to put the Angels on the board. The Mariners scored three two-out runs in the first, with Kyle Seagers 16th home run getting it started. Stefen Romero, Justin Smoak, Corey Hart and Dustin Ackley followed with consecutive singles, with Hart and Ackley getting the RBIs.
