Mark Bowman New Executive Director of Kentucky Veterans Centers Navy Veteran and Kentucky Native Has Long Experience Administering Nursing Homes FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 6, 2014) – Governor Steve Beshear has appointed Mark Bowman as the new executive director of the Office of Kentucky Veterans Centers (OKVC), a branch of the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs (KDVA). “It would be hard to find a more qualified person to do this job than Mark,” Governor Beshear said. “He has devoted his career to administering nursing homes, and found his calling ensuring that veterans get the very best care at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center.” “I am honored and humbled by this appointment,” Bowman said. “This is as close to a dream job as it gets. I hope I live up to the expectations of both the governor and of Kentucky’s veterans.” Bowman served as administrator of Thomson-Hood Veterans Center (THVC) in Wilmore since February. As executive director of OKVC, Bowman oversees the operation of all three Kentucky Veterans Centers: Paul E. Patton Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard, Joseph “Eddie” Ballard Western Kentucky Veterans Center in Hanson and THVC, as well as a fourth veterans center currently under construction in Radcliff. Currently more than 500 Kentucky veterans reside in the state’s three veterans nursing homes. The Radcliff Veterans Center will add 120 beds when it opens in fall 2015. “I am confident that our veterans needing skilled nursing care are in good hands with Mark overseeing our veterans centers,” KDVA Commissioner Heather French Henry said. Bowman, 53, served as a Navy cryptographer for four years before graduating from the University of Kentucky with a masters degree in health services administration. A licensed nursing home administrator, he worked as a nursing home administrator, director of operations and the president of a multifacility organization in the private sector for 21 years before accepted the position of administrator of THVC. “I wanted to move into the public sector, and I wanted to work with veterans,” Bowman says. “KDVA lets me do both.”
