Mark Renshaw on paper is in for a busy entered in events in both Belgium and Britain. The champion Bathurst Cyclist is in the Omega Pharma Quickstep teams for both the Brussels Cycling Classic on Saturday (6/9/14) and the Tour of Britain starting the next day in Liverpool. Logistically it is possible for Renshaw to do both events and he has a good record at both races having finished runner-up at the 2012 Brussels Classic and a stage winner at the Tour of Britain, however with Cav’s arch rival Marcel Kettel at Britain it is expected Mark will be on full lead-out duties for his team captain in the UK. With Renshaws OPQS teams final plans still unknown it will be interesting whether the Bathurst Star will get the chance to have a dig in Brussels as he does look well placed in the Belgium Sprint Semi Classic. One of the oldest races on the international calendar the Brussels Classic was first run 120 years ago in August 1893 but the event has suffered due to constant battle with traffic problems between Paris and Brussels and consequently the course was changed in 2013 to the very bike friendly road around Brussels. In fact after the 1966 Classic won by Tour de France winner Felice Gimondi the race was cancelled for a number of years due to road permission problems but returned in a big way in the 1970’s with riders such as Merckx (1973) and Freddy Maertens (1975) winning the Classic. Clearly it would be a nice event to have on your resume. PHOTO – 1973 Brussels Classic winner Eddie Merckx (world’s greatest cyclist). nswcycling/forum/smf_2-0_install/index.php?topic=355.0
