Mark writing from Minneriya National Park, Sri Lanka. One of the best places in the world to spot Asian elephants in the wild! As we turned a corner in our private safari jeep we were confronted with a herd of 30 of them grazing, with some extremely cute young babies in the midst (video below). 15 minutes later, a further 70 odd appeared out of the trees by the reservoir. I was mesmerised for at least an hour watching them play, graze & bathe. The Gathering (as it is more commonly known) of Elephants in Minneriya National Park is the largest seasonally recurring concentration of wild elephants found in the world. It is best experienced during the dry season (July to September) when water supplies start to diminish, so more and more elephants congregate around the Minneriya reservoir where the grasses are rich and fertile.
