Marlo Taylor Nall gave me the number eight, so here goes: Eight things you might not know about Maggy Shannon: 1. Even though my name is about as Irish as can be, I have no known Irish ancestors. FWIW, I can trace my ancestry on both sides to at least 1613. No Irishmen. 2. Im too modest to claim that I am an expert on European royalty but others who would know have used that term. 3. When I meet celebrities, I generally dont realize who they are until afterward. One time I attended a meeting in Atlanta. My lunch partner and I had a lovely and extensive discussion of E.P. Thompsons theories on class and how they applied to race relations in the United States. I knew perfectly well who Hank Aaron was, Id seen him play. But until Stephen explained, I didnt connect the famous athlete with my new friend the nice auto dealer Mr Henry Aaron. 4. Four degrees separate me from Adolf Hitler and five degrees from the famous lost princess Grand Duchess Anastasia. 5. I make my own soap from scratch and I won first place for jam at the Tennessee Valley Fair in 1988. 6. When I was a teenager, my career goal was to become Chairman of the Federal Reserve. (Whew! Thats a wish Im glad didnt come true!) 7. I speed-read. That sure was handy in grad school. 8. The only place outside the United States Ive ever wanted to go is St Petersburg, Russia. Ive wanted to visit the Hermitage Museum since 1979.
