Mary Louise Versfelt Obituary - Final Mary Louise Versfelt Mary Louise Versfelt died in her Houston, Texas home on September 7, 2013. Mary was born in Longview Texas on October 1, 1932 to George and Gladys Louise Joseph. She was preceded in death by her brother George Joseph. Porter and Mary’s children are Porter L. Versfelt, III of Acworth, Georgia; Joseph W. Versfelt of Cairo, Egypt and Houston, Texas; James E. Versfelt of Miami Beach, Florida and Annelies Long of Houston, Texas. Grand children are Nicholas B. Versfelt, Cash Long, and Wyatt Versfelt. Mary graduated in 1949 from Texas Womens University, Denton, Texas as a teacher. Mary met her husband in Midland,Texas where she was teaching school. They married in the First Methodist Church of Longview, Texas on June 25, 1955 and she enjoyed a happy life of teaching, world travel and an adventurous married life of over 58 years. Mary also lived in Dallas, Texas and Tulsa, Oklahoma where she was active in the Presbyterian church. Mary and her husband traveled the world and lived in Mendoza, Argentina, Masjid-e Sulaiman, Iran, Kfar Shnaryahu (Tel Aviv), Israel, Ankara, Turkey and Gerrards Cross, England following her husband’s career as a geologist in the petroleum industry. Mary became active with womens’ groups in these countries where she was involved in teaching and humanitarian projects with the local people. Mary was an active herb gardener, a Master Gardener, an antique collector and a member of The Herb Society of America for 30 years, where she lectured on the growing and culinary use of herbs as a member of the Houston, Texas South Texas Unit and the Round Top, Texas Pioneer Unit. She also lectured at Klein High School (Houston) numerous garden clubs and organizations in Texas and New Mexico. The family would like express thanks to all her many friends, gardeners, "herbies" and pen-pals worldwide for their friendship and support during her life. In lieu of flowers, monetary contributions may be made to The Herb Society of America, 9019 Kirtland Chardon Road, Kirtland, Ohio 44094 in memory of our beloved Mary.
