Maryland FireWire...12/9/14 Anne Arundel Co. pulls fire apparatus out of service after truck loses wheel on way to blaze A total stranger helped the family get out in time when fire spread from the second floor of a Glen Burnie home on 6th Avenue, and then it became a waiting game for firefighters to arrive. I think it seemed like forever to them, but thats probably normal when youre panicking, said Mike Gordon, after his fiancée and children escaped in the nick of time. When the call came in to the Linthicum fire station on Camp Meade Road, three firefighters climbed aboard an engine and took off, but a short distance from the fire, the driver realized something was wrong. So he started to ease off the accelerator to slow the vehicle down and at that time the drivers side wheel of the apparatus failed, said Capt. Russ Davies of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. Workers had just inspected the engine the day before, and initially, firefighters suspected the failure may have been due to Pierce Manufacturings TAK-4 suspension system, a problem which prompted a nationwide recall of more than 130 fire trucks this year. But in previous incidents, faulty control arms were to blame, and in this case, it appears a ball joint failed causing the wheel of fall off. In either case, the department isnt taking any chances.
