Maryland Homegrown School Lunch Week: Sept. 15-19 Garrett County schools are participating in the Maryland Homegrown Lunch Week, slated September 15 – 19. Various locally grown products will be served in the county’s cafeterias. On Tuesday, tomatoes and Romaine lettuce, provided by Garrett Growers Cooperative, Inc. in Mt. Lake Park, will be served as part of the school lunch. On Friday, the schools will serve maple syrup, provided by Steyer Brothers Maple Syrup in Oakland, with school lunches. The use of local products will continue throughout the school year, while supplies are available. The Homegrown School Lunch Week, an element of the Jane Lawton Farm-to-School Program, was created in the 2008 Maryland General Assembly (SB 158 Farm-to-School Program - Activities and Promotional Events: sponsored by State Senator Jamie Raskin and State Delegate Sheila Hixson of Montgomery County) and was signed into law by Governor Martin O’Malley in May, 2008.
