Maryland Hunger Solutions believes that the school meal and WIC provisions included in the Omnibus/Continuing Resolution set a troubling precedent for the health of families and children in Maryland. The provisions are better than what some Members of Congress had proposed, but the political attempt to force white potatoes into the WIC food package, weaken whole grain requirements for schools, and permit additional sodium in school meals is disturbing. It is our hope that this will not be a precedent, and that the school meal standards will continue to follow the established thoughtful, public rulemaking process and the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Maryland Hunger Solutions will continue to work with families, educators, and child nutrition advocates throughout the state to protect the programs which feed vulnerable children and their families.
