Massive apartment fire in New Jersey displaces hundreds (video) A raging fire destroyed an upscale apartment complex Wednesday in New Jersey, leaving hundreds of residents displaced but causing no serious injuries. Edgewater, N.J., Mayor Michael McPartland tells NJ that a few firefighters did have minor injuries and one woman was rescued from the Avalon at Edgewater complex, located near the Hudson River across from Manhattan. Edmund Rhoads, spokesman for Avalon Communities, which owns the 408-unit apartment complex, said about 400 residents were displaced, reports NJ. He said they were taken for temporary shelter at a local school before being moved to a community center. The fire started around 4:30 p.m. and residents said it quickly grew in intensity. It’s cause remains under investigation. Among those displaced is John Sterling, the radio broadcaster for the New York Yankees, reports the New York Times. Sterling had lived in the building for nearly 10 years. Sterling told the Times he returned home around 5 p.m. Wednesday and smelled smoke in the garage but continued to his fourth-floor apartment.
