Massive evictions in Port Moresby should be urgently addressed - TopicsExpress

Massive evictions in Port Moresby should be urgently addressed taking into consideration the interests of women and children. There is a lot of assumptions being spread that people who live in settlements or who are illegal squatters are only from outer Provinces. In fact, many Papua New Guineans cannot afford the rent in Port Moresby who have been living in Port Moresby for years and even though there is a growing middle class, the expat culture in PNG is driving up cost of living making squatting a new way of life for even professional and educated Papua New Guineans. Mining companies who bring employees from overseas should actually build their own accommodation sites so that it does not massively impact on the local real estate market which drives out locals Papua New Guineans from their homes. Further, public policies need to be implemented to at least give notice periods of at least one month or a reasonable time frame for people to be evicted. Evictions should be carried out in a humane fashion. radionz.co.nz/international/pacific-news/256267/png-top-cop-worried-about-poverty-and-housing
