Match Brief: #38/31 Aug: Not A Perfect Sunday For The Liverpool Supporters (Except For A Few) The East of Anfield players were naturally ecstatic with Liverpools convincing hammering of Spurs last evening but before that, they had to endure a narrow 1-2 loss in a keenly contested encounter against us. But for the likes of Teck Wah, Chung Wen and, of course this pseudo match reporter, being Liverpool diehards ourselves, it was a perfect footballing Sunday. 1st half was a rather scrappy affair, notably only for Kian Hwas double mistimed tackles on EoAs players and later, he himself paid for his excessive enthusiasm when he was at the receiving end of a loose elbow fling dispensed by EoAs sweeper and as a result, he suffered a cut just below the right eye. Both sides came close to find the net - Kian Hwas half volley from outside the box kissed the upright and our further 2 efforts from Chor Guan and Teck Chye were just inches off target. EoA threatened when their forward was sent through by his striking partners header but instead of capitalising on our out-of-position Brandon, he chose to take an extra touch in an attempt to round our keeper but only resulting in dragging the ball to his weaker left foot and the subsequent shot went wide. Apart from that sole breach of our backline, Kok Hock & Co expertly marshalled the defence with a no-nonsense performance. 1st half ended scoreless. The match came to life in the 2nd half. We continued to probe and EoAs custodian produced an unbelievable triple saves to deny us of our opening goal but the clean sheet did not remain for much longer. Chor Guan met the in-swinging corner from Kian Hwa with a thumping header that came off the underside of the horizontal and crossed the goal line. Simon then produced a overhead through ball for Chor Guan to lob it over their on-rushing keeper for our 2nd goal. Just when things looked cruising for us, a couple of moments of lack of leadership caused us to concede a needless goal late in the match and consequently gifted EoA the vital momentum to seize control. First, instead of taking leadership to be in control of the ball, both Chwee Leng and Simon got into each others way, resulting in losing the possession. EoAs midfielder quickly sent the ball into the box for their speedy forward which Kok Hock appeared to have him under close watch. Instead of taking charge to clear the ball away or at least shield the ball from their forward, he waited for Brandon to come forward and collect the ball but EoAs forward possessed that vital speed to get to the ball ahead of Brandon and toe-poked it past him to reduce the deficit. Smelling blood, the goal was a shot in the arm for EoA and they poured bodies forward, including advancing their sweeper into an attacking position, in search of the equalising goal. They came very close to get it but Brandon atoned for the goal conceded with a superb reflex one-hand save to palm out a thunderous volley from EoAs sweeper-turned-forward. The final 5 minutes produced enough action to put everyone on the sideline on their toes but neither side could further find the net, although Teck Wah did but his effort was contentiously ruled offside. Final score: Marine Sunday 2 -- East of Anfield 1.
