Match Reports – South Brisbane – 09/11/2014 Homestead Park – Shailer Park Screaming Cats 3/123 (13 overs) defeated Brisbane All Sorts 8/120 (17 overs) by 5 wickets Another week, and another win for the Cats, who have cruised pretty effortlessly to most of their victories so far this season, currently sitting at a 9-0 WL record...although the final round match against Unwatchables on 30th November looms as a real showstopper. Bowling first, they dismantled most of the All Sorts batting line-up pretty handily – Trent Spring with 2/11 and Aaron Mitchell with 2/12 both collected a brace, while Jackson Murphy, Craig Whatmore, Matt Smith and Wes Davey all grabbed one each. Special mention to Craig for going at 12.75 runs an over, when the next highest was 6 – someone liked his bowling, and I suspect it was Hesten Erwin, who played a lone hand to blaze 71 off 41 balls at the top of the order, almost 60% of the team total for the All Sorts, before he was eventually dismissed at the end of 17 overs. Matt Smith and Aaron Mitchell scored the opening duties for the Cats, and both players hit solid totals, but were dismissed just shy of a half century, Matt departing for 47 and Aaron for 48. Given the game he’d had so far it was inevitable Craig would go cheaply, which left Trent (23*) and Jackson (3*) to perform the perfunctory task of knocking off the rest of the runs. Amit Kalsi was the man in the wickets for the All Sorts, collecting 2/19 and David Miller 1/22. Box Shots 4/170 (20 overs) defeated Southern All Stars 8/122 (19 overs) by 48 runs Another convincing win for the Box Shots, who thanks to the All Sorts earlier defeat, leapfrogged them into 4th place as we approach the end of the regular season, leaving them in good stead for finals contention. It was a solid effort from their top order – Andrew Wright (46) and Nicholas Dugdell (31) set things up with a very respectable opening stand, before giving way to John McKenna, who advanced the score further, compiling 54* off 32 deliveries. There was time for Ben Densie to slog a quick 24 before he was run out, Nathan Higgins hit 12* as the Box Shots put together 170, a very good score on the big Homestead Park field. For the All Stars, it was their go-to man with the ball who shone again – Adam ‘Pud’ Williams proving a very difficult proposition as he collected 3/15 off 4 overs, while Mike Rosentreter also grabbed a wicket, finishing with 1/30. Mike opened with Gav as the All Stars commenced the chase – from a view of the scorecard it looks like it was a frustrating day for the All Stars, with plenty of batsmen getting starts, but just as they got into their innings, a wicket would go down. Gav was first, departing for 21, Mike made 37, Jarrod Leathley 35 – but the Box Shots bowlers had all the answers, Nathan Higgins getting a handful with 3/32, and Daniel Dwyer, Michael Smith, John McKenna, Andrew Wright and Robert Holt all grabbing one apiece, as Box Shots completed a bonus point at the end of 19 overs. Balmoral State High School Raging Johnsons 2/124 (15 overs) defeated Soy Quearns and the Wood Moths 7/120 (20 overs) by 6 wickets A tough day at the office for Moths against one of the better bowling outfits going around – things were looking good early on, with Doug Tapper (25) and Dave Carruthers (32) laying a solid platform for the Moths bats to build on, however the loss of a few key players cheaply didn’t help matters – I gather also the reliable Jeff Provians is on the long-term injury list due to a ligament being torn off the bone last week. They had Greg Farrelly back in the side though – some players from Hibernators might remember a terrifying spell he bowled last summer of 4 overs, 4 wickets, 9 runs on the turf pitch at 7th Brigade Park - and he proved he’s not just a bowler, top scoring with 43 off 27. In the end Moths put together 120, definitely below what they would have liked, but it gave them something to work with. For the Johnsons, Troy Oxnam collected 3/20 off 4 overs – Matthew Main also took 3 wickets – for five runs, from one over – must have been an eventful one! Cam Daniel grabbed the other to go down, and Matt Baker had a catch as he completed a tidy day behind the stumps. Speaking of Matt, he set the Johnsons up for victory, hitting 52* off 35 at the top of the innings, and in conjunction with Glenn Verner (27), Tom Cramb (18*) and Ryan Grebert (20*) steered the Johnsons to a bonus point win at the end of over 15. For the Moths, Doug Tapper and Matt Ridley picked up the wickets to fall. Conor and the Jets 0/194 (20 overs) defeated Dingers 8/155 (19 overs) by 39 runs A pretty complete batting effort from the Jets set them up for a massive team total – Trent Manton (54*), Pete McKenna (51*) and John Bullion (52*) all chalked up half centuries, John leading the race to line, needing only 16 deliveries to motor past 50. Conor Dowdall also hit 21* and Ryan Tiernan 16* at the end, as the Jets enjoyed one of their best batting efforts for a while – for the Dingers, not much luck in the wickets department, however Mark Curtis bowled a pretty tidy spell to give up only 26 runs off his 4 overs, a pretty good return given the total. When you’re chasing a big score, you might as well not die wondering – Jordan Edey certainly took that approach, swinging hard at everything to crash 42 off 19 before he picked out a fielder, as did Charlie Wyatt on his way to 29. Dave Carruthers, backing up from Moths enjoyed another good game with the bat, clubbing 36 off 15, but the Jets were holding all their catches and picking up the wickets, to cruel the Dingers chase at the end of 19 overs. Ashleigh Scott returned best figures for the Jets, taking 3/21 off 4 overs, an excellent effort – Pete McKenna got 2/27 and Conor Dowdall, Ryan Tierna and Rory Dowdall all got a wicket each, while John Bullion continued his good form with the gloves, snaffling two catches. #THIRSTYGOATS 1/122 (13.3 overs) defeated Gorilla Jet-Pack Attack 6/121 (20 overs) An excellent bowling effort from those Thirsty, and frequently hungover Goats saw the Gorillas in a bit of strife early on – 3 wickets went down for 13, while chewing up 31 balls in the process – Jackson Larkins was the main beneficiary of this game of join the dots, collecting excellent figures of 2/8 off 4 overs, while the crafty Trent Brock was also tying them in knots with his off breaks, taking 1/14 off 4. The Gorillas did fight back as the game progressed though – Luke Gold hit 20, and Hugh Myers 30, joining with Michael Marshall’s 47* off 34, who batted throughout the innings, and ensured that the Gorillas made a decent fist of the total. In addition to the bowlers mentioned, Dillon Lane, Chris Carlton and Matt Warner all picked up wickets, Matt also collecting a catch and stumping as well. The Goats openers did a decent job of chasing down the target single handedly – Allan Ridgewell continued his good form to make 45 before he was stumped trying to make it 51, Warner hit a patient 50*, which left Chris Carlton (20*) and Rick Ransley (7*) to knock off the remainder. A bonus point win for the Goats moves them up to 6th place in a packed mid-table field, and they’ll have one eye on the finals at this rate, with some very winnable games coming up. The Unwatchables 4/222 (20 overs) defeated SCPoker 8/73 (14.2 overs) by 149 runs An emphatic victory for Unwatchables – unfortunately we don’t have a scorecard yet, as an issue with The Unwatchables team list prevented the scorecard from being saved when the umpire was entering in the stats earlier today. It’s now been fixed up – you can blame Niel Bosman’s profile, for some reason it duplicated on the team list. Once Arun gets back from college he’s going to put these stats in, and I’ll update this post to show the report tomorrow once he does. – Paul.
