Material of interests for actors...Scan Down Commit to your craft. How many people have told you that? How many times have you read it? What does it mean? Have you made that commitment or do you just think you have? When you take an acting class to you attend every hour, every single minute the class meets? Do you turn your cell phone off, leave the social time for before and after class and focus 100% on the class or lessons being shared by the instructor and your fellow students? Do you stay with the same coach at least a year, and preferably several years? Are you a member of at least one of the trade unions? SAG? AFTRA? Equity? Are you active in your union(s) and honest to its rules and regulations? Do you invest in your craft for photos, updated often, video, audio and other marketing tools? Do you have a web site, lists on the casting services, have an IMDB presence and take part in on-line marketing groups? Do you keep track of your mileage, your investments in your craft (classes, cable, movie tickets, video rentals, marketing tools, reading material)? Do you read the trades and learn about other aspects of the industry and the craft? I am amazed at how Las Vegas talent think they are professional and ready because they did some extra work, have earned a union card, have some tape on themselves (regardless of quality) or been told by friends, family and under-qualified instructors that they are ready and professional, before getting to know the true profession and those who work in it. I am proud of those who do the work, concentrate and who prove to producers that Nevada has talent, or who move on to Hollywood, New York or a theater city and launch their careers in earnest. But too often as a teacher I see students disappear for days or weeks without the professionalism to keep their instructor informed, to complete the work they committed to or the true task at hand, feeling they are ready or that they have grown beyond a class, school or market. How can you claim to be a professional if you do not act professionally? If you burn bridges or worse yet simply move on without giving those who worked with your care about you the time of day? Still, this is most of Las Vegas, and Vegas talent. Am I airing sour grapes? No, I am passing on real advice for those who feel they can go from the joy and fun of being actors to the pressure, rewards and career of being true professionals I do tell my students that what you do, what you learn, how you act, the commitment you give will impact you for the rest of your life. If you do it right, you will always feel pride and the love and passion for what you are doing, and why you are doing it, whether for a living or your church, for the community or for additional dollars on the side. Enjoy what your do but respect those who you work with, study with, and with whom you share your passion for performing. You will not regret it.
