Mathbaria Upazila (Pirojpur district) with an area of 353.25 sq km, is bounded by Pirojpur sadar and Bhandaria upazilas on the north, Patharghata upazila on the south, Bamna and Kathalia upazilas on the east, Sarankhola and Morrelganj upazilas on the west. Main rivers are Baleshwar and Pona. Mathbaria is located at 22.2915686N 89.95665E. Mathbaria (Town) consists of 9 wards and 15 mahallas. The area of the town is 15.92 sq km. It has a population of 16573; male 52.07%, female 47.93%; density of population is 1041 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 51.5%. The town has one dakbungalow. Mathbaria thana was established in 1904 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 11 union parishads, 67 mouzas and 92 villages. As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Population 253915; male 50.13%, female 49.87%; Muslim 87.52%, Hindu 12.37% and others 0.11%.
