Matt Update: Thank you God for Matts good day today. I had begun - TopicsExpress

Matt Update: Thank you God for Matts good day today. I had begun typing an update earlier today explaining that the nurse last night did finally realize that Matts thumbs up was just something he sometimes does. Before I could finish, Hillary, Adam and Shelley came out to tell me that Matt had opened his eyes for a couple of minutes (as opposed to the 10-15 seconds over the past few days) and that he reacted so strongly to the pain stimuli on the right side (which has been much less responsive than the left) that he actually came up in the bed at about a 45 degree angle. The really cool thing about him opening his eyes was that he was not receiving pain stimuli and no one was talking directly to him - they were just having a conversation around him and those beautiful blue eyes opened up. He is not really focusing or seeming very aware at this point, but just seeing those eyes is such a gift for us. Marc and I went back there then and he also opened them for us - this time for close to 5 minutes. He was also making a mighty attempt to break out of his bed - he kept jerking up on the left arm that has a wrist restraint - and finally a la The Incredible Hulk ripping out of his shirt, Matt broke out of the restraint. I had to yell for help since he is so strong. This evening around 5:00, the nurse asked if Hillary and I would step out for about 15-20 minutes just while they were spiffing him up a little bit. It ended up being a full hour before we could go back in. When we got back in there, his nurse and the respiratory therapist looked completely worn out. His nurse was even sweating - and she is a young slender woman. Turns out that Matt had apparently just gone completely Ninja on them and gave them a battle royal. Hillary and I were so proud. :) He did not appreciate being fussed over to such a great extent, and got so agitated that he was flailing all 4 extremities, even the weak side, broke out of his restraint, managed to yank out one of the IVs, and was going for his A line and for the tubes in his mouth. This made us SO happy for a couple of reasons. It means that he is having a heightened awareness of what is going on around him and what is being done to him. Also, even though he was extremely agitated, and his numbers went up, they did not go crazy and he didnt neuro-storm like he did the last 2 nights when he got so agitated. His oxygen level did not even have to be adjusted. I just feel this is huge that his body seemed to tolerate that so much better tonight - and if the condition of Yolanda and Mary was any indication, his agitation level must have been much higher tonight than the past 2. He wore those gals out. I have also seen him sort of moving his bite block around in his mouth like he is trying to figure out what is in there and his face was extremely expressive a couple of times today when he did not like what was being done. As of this morning, his blood cultures were not growing anything, so thats a blessing. His lung cultures do show 2 different types of bacteria, however the doctors dont seem overly concerned as they started him on a broad spectrum antibiotic a few days ago. As the culture grows, they should be able to narrow the course of the anti-biotics down to a more specific course, since they will know better what his bug is. His temp is staying pretty low, so they seem to think the antibiotic is doing its job. Joel is on night shift again. Just texted me to say that Matt was moving all 4 extremities when they checked him this hour, so another piece of good news. Thank you God for standing with us through this, and for loving us and Matt. Thank you for all the wonderful blessings we received today. Please bless all of these wonderful people who continue to pray for Matt and for us, and to support us with so much love. We are continuing to claim and to believe James 5:15: The prayer offered up in faith will make the sick person well; God will raise him up......... Thanks to all of you for everything. Love, Cheryl & Joel
