Matthew 1 ~ Wrap Up • As the “son of Abraham,” through Abraham’s son Isaac, Jesus fulfilled the promise God made to Abraham that through him “all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.” (Matthew 1:1; Genesis 12:1-3) • As the “son of David,” Jesus is qualified to sit on the throne of King David forever, just as God promised in the Davidic covenant. (2 Samuel 7:5-16) • Jesus’s genealogy establishes Jesus’s legal right through Abraham and his regal right through David to be the King of the Jews. (Matthew 1:1) • Four Gentile, non-Jewish women were included in Jesus’s genealogy, something that was rare in those days. (Matthew 1:3, 5-6) • Each of the men and women in the genealogy reveals a God of grace who sent his Son to be the King of the Jews and the Savior of the world. (Matthew 1:21) • Joseph and Mary were betrothed, a legally binding relationship somewhat similar to what we would call engagement that required a certificate of divorce to break. (Matthew 1:19) • Matthew states categorically, just as Isaiah indicates prophetically, that “before [Mary and Joseph] came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 1:18; Isaiah 7:14) • Five times in the opening two chapters of his Gospel, Matthew states that God communicated to Joseph and the wise men through his dreams, a most unusual occurrence. (Matthew 1:20; 2:12-13, 19, 22) • Joseph named his newborn son Jesus, a name that means “Savior,” because Jesus “will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)
