Matthew 20:20-28 (Read it…do not have a Bible? Goggle, On-line Bible….I will wait for you. Got it? Read this passage). The mother of James and John asked Jesus to give her sons special positions in his kingdom. Wow, I believe parents naturally want to see their children promoted and honored, earn the highest grades, become the best athletes, play as many sports as possible, read a million books in a year, attend elite schools, etc., etc., etc. I do not know about you, but for me, this desire can be dangerous (or is dangerous) if it causes my children to lose sight of God’s specific will for them. You might say, “Oh, Zoey, they are just kids, so let them be kids.” I respect your opinion and thoughts. However, I also believe God may have different work in mind---not as glamorous, but just as important. So often parents’ desires for their children’s advancement must be held in check as they pray that God’s will be done in their children’s lives. Matthew 20:24 The other disciples were upset with James and John for trying to grab the top positions. All the disciples wanted to be the greatest….this maybe what some of us (parents) want for our children, but Jesus teaches that the greatest person in God’s kingdom is the servant of all. Authority is given not for self-importance, ambition, or respect, but for useful service to God and his creation. I want to be the example of a servant to my kids, not teach them to “keep up with the Jones” not have the attitudes every man for himself, etc. If my kiddos want to be great or do great, they must learn to imitate Christ and become servants.
