Matthew 21:23, NKJV: “Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?” Authority has various recognized and acceptable sources in our world today. In the things of God, the source of authority is very important. According to Bro Emma Okorie, when the LORD Jesus Christ started His earthly ministry, the Jews came up with the question of authority because they wanted to find out where He got His authority from. “As far as they knew, Jesus just emerged out of nowhere, did not go through any known theological institution on mosaic laws but yet taught with authority and power, performing miracles, signs and wonders. They wanted to know His source. The Jewish authorities were wiser than we are today where anyone can perform signs and wonders of questionable origin. If the authority of our LORD Jesus Christ could be questioned because He had no pedigree, what about all these mushroom places today with their claims to power? The Jewish leadership asked Jesus, “By what authority?” An articulate and intelligent mind is inquisitive to know the source of every miracle. It is not just enough to be with child; of what source is the baby? The wealth you suddenly received overnight, where did it come from? Every apple received from Satan always has worms embedded within. None can receive anything wholesome except it comes from above. All blessings flow from above. The old Jews were well taught on theology. Who ordained you, brother? Who affirmed your ministry? Where are you coming from? Your power depends upon the authority that confirmed it. The secular world wants to know the authenticity of the academic certificate of a job applicant. Medications are judged by the imprint of national regulatory laws. No lawyer is truly qualified to practice until he or she is called to the bar. The question “By what authority?” is truly pregnant with meanings. It is a question most Christians who are not wise fail to ask before they go after power from certain places. As long as their immediate needs are met they ask no further questions until dire consequences begin to manifest.
