Maumee Bay State Park in the area of Ohio once known as the Great Black Swamp – a great flat plain formed when Lake Erie receded to its current size about 13,000 years ago. In 1859, a system of public ditches was installed throughout the swamp, followed by intense lumbering and draining, leaving behind rich soils on a flat landscape. In 1975, Maumee Bay officially became a state park in the midst of the resulting agricultural region. ohiostateparks.org/maumeebay
