May 30, 2014 update: Had a full day of bluefin hunting aboard - TopicsExpress

May 30, 2014 update: Had a full day of bluefin hunting aboard the Dusky yesterday with reasonable weather and sea conditions for a change. Overcast and downright cold temperatures in the low 40s as we pushed off the dock at 04:15 headed east with high hopes. The life throughout our early travels has been extremely abundant, with all the great signs we look for. After covering much ground already for the past 10 days or so, it is clear that there are a few bluefin already in attendance, but not the large bunches of fish we will need to really start to target them with light tackle. The fish we have been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of near the surface have all been of substantial size, in fact too large for the methods we employ. There just have not been many warm days and winds have persisted out of the north and east, so it may be a few days before we see more groups of bluefin arriving. Once again, the winds drove us off the grounds early, as the SE winds kicked hard as this latest cold front pushed its way over our heads. Hopefully the southwest flow predicted for Monday through Thursday will get them headed inshore from the canyon edges, where we have rock solid intel that huge herds of them are milling about less than 80 miles away....that distance can be covered by even casual bluefin in just two tides. The table is set, just waiting for Chuck to come to the feast. Back at it hopefully tomorrow, but definitely Monday if this current NE system pulls out slowly rather than quickly.
