May 30th 1854 After three months of heated debate, the Kansas-Nebraska Act became law. The measure, introduced by Stephen A. Douglas & backed by President Franklin Pierce, negates the 1850 Missouri Compromise by allowing residents of the two territories to decide the slavery issue. Thus began the border wars between Kansas & Missouri as the pro & anti slavery factions actively sought to determine elections in Kansas. Opponents of the measure formed a new organization – the Republican Party.
