Maybe I should get a therapist...... 7. Build Your Support Network. We all need support. The path of teaching yoga can be a lonely one, and it is filled with unique pressures. Your livelihood depends on people coming back week in and week out because they like you and appreciate what you offer in your classes, which is deeply personal to you. Your students will inevitably project both positive and negative qualities onto you, and the job requires a level of boundaries, empathy and communication skills, along with self-promotion, disciplined time management and awareness of personal limitations, fears and areas in which growth and healing are necessary. In many ways, the choice to teach yoga is a way of signing up for a very intensive crash course in personal growth. All of your insecurities will come up, and how you handle this may well depend on how much support you have. Close friends, fellow teachers, mentors and even a therapist may be indispensable if you want to have a long and fruitful career, are committed to continued growth and learning, and are inspired to share yourself in beneficial and meaningful ways. The biggest trap for yoga teachers is becoming solely identified with their teaching persona and not having relationships in which they can drop the role and be real about their vulnerabilities and challenges. Build your support network intentionally to help you stay sane and grounded.
