Maybe I was aiming a little high when I suggested etiquette was missing from the Saturday morning Coffee Grind. Basic manners would be a more realistic stepping stone. At least now I understand why the gentlemen of the sport so often remain silent ... facing such defiance and arrogance is a difficult task. Its no great surprise that on a perfect spring morning, this ride only had 50 odd riders compared to its former glory where 80 odd, and occasionally 100+, riders would all participate. Confidence and exuberance are positive character traits, but when they become elitism and egotism a line has been crossed. Self appointed heroes with a palmares as thin as their character and middle aged adolescents with so much achieved, and so much to give, but lost in their need to validate themselves. These are the people that our coaches are protecting the next generation from by keeping them away from what was once a great teaching platform, now tainted by attitudes and egos.
