Maybe this will get young people more interested in American history. We think of the Founding Fathers are wise old men in powdered wigs. But Todd Andrlik, editor of the Journal of the American Revolution, says that when the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, most of the leading figures of that time were under 40, and some were teenagers and twentysomethings. The Marquis de Lafayette was just 18. Aaron Burr was 20. Nathan Hale and Alexander Hamilton, both 21. And the lady who sewed our first flag, Betsy Ross, was just 24. So I guess we’re lucky they didn’t have Facebook or video games back then. They might’ve never gotten around to founding America at all.
