Mayo Sinn Féin Motion Opposing Water Charges Speaking ahead of the January meeting of Mayo County Council where Sinn Fein tabled a motion opposing Water Charges Cllr. Rose Conway-Walsh said. “This motion is about acknowledging the abject failure of Irish Water to provide a sustainable solution to water services sector. In that context it would be irresponsible of us as Councillors not to do everything we can to put a stop to the current course of action. I and my collegues Cllr. Gerry Murray and Thérese Ruane are asking elected Councillors on Mayo County Council to support this motion and show solidarity with citizens the length and breadth of this country who oppose water charges and the massive and escalating amounts of money being spent on establishing Uisce Éireann; including over €85 million on consultants, €539 million to date on installing water meters, over €5 million in legal fees, and a continued commitment by the coalition to provide more funding. Sinn Féin reiterates its opposition to the introduction of domestic water charges North and South of this Country and calls for a referendum to be put before the people to include a constitutional amendment to prevent the water services being privatised. Sinn Féin calls for the immediate abolition of the water charges, and the dismantling of Uisce Éireann to be replaced by a new body under democratic control and accountable directly to the Oireachtas, the Committee for Public Accounts and the Comptroller and Auditor General, and to representatives of reformed local authorities. People just cannot afford another bill. Least of all a bill that lines the pockets of consultants, the legal profession and wealthy developers. Mayo Sinn Féin will join protests planned for Castlebar and Ballina on Saturday 31st January in Mayo. ” (Unfortunately FF/FG and most independents did not support our motion - thank you to those who did I know Gerry Ginty and Seamus Wier did)
