Mayor Hales today spoke at the Legacy of the Civil Rights Act of 1964: Past, Present and Future event today, talking about the citys role in ensuring equity. Without money, protection, power, you do not have equality. Mayor Hales discussed ways he has worked to make the city more equitable by expanding opportunity for money, protection and power. For example: Money: The Ban the Box initiative allows returning citizens (not ex-offenders) to apply for jobs in the city without having to disclose their criminal past, giving them a chance to move on from crime and into a stable income. Protection: Mayor Hales has began implementing U.S. Department of Justice settlement, which in part makes the police department more responsive to the community. Power: Mayor Hales is one of 11 mayors nationwide who has invested in a Black Male Achievement program, which works with community leaders to elevate young, black men into bright futures.
