Mayor Richard C. David today announced a free new community notification service that will deliver text message and e-mail alerts to residents so they can stay informed about public safety. “This is another resource that will make our community safer,” said Mayor David. “Building strong lines of communication between residents and the Binghamton Police Department has been a focus of my administration. This alert system keeps residents informed and keeps City government on the cutting edge of public safety technology.” Residents can sign up by simply texting their ZIP CODE to 888-777. Residents can also sign up for e-mail alerts online at nixle/. Alerts will include real-time public safety information, traffic updates and emergency notifications. As the City of Binghamton is no stranger to floods and other natural disasters, this system will provide instant and reliable communication from government officials in the event of weather emergencies. In addition to joining the alert system, Mayor David encouraged residents to follow the Binghamton Police Department’s Twitter account, @BinghamtonPD, and the Binghamton Police Department’s Facebook page, facebook/BinghamtonPD. “Communication and transparency are key when it comes to public safety,” said Binghamton Police Chief Joseph T. Zikuski. “We need to have citizens involved and informed in order to help keep our neighborhoods safe.” Binghamton University officials and the City of Binghamton / Binghamton University Liaison Officer Dan Flanders joined Mayor David to announce the program. Binghamton University is an important partner in the initiative, with more than 1,000 college students living downtown and many more in the surrounding neighborhoods. “Strengthening the lines of communication will help enhance the off-campus experience for our students,” said Milton Chester, Binghamton University’s Assistant Dean for Off Campus Programs & Services. More than 3,000 agencies in 49 states publish updates via Nixle. Alerts are sent from a secure site, so information can only come from registered members of the Binghamton Police Department. Neither Nixle nor the Binghamton Police Department will ever share resident information with a third party.
