Mbalu Fonnie, a licensed nurse midwife was Matron at Kenema - TopicsExpress

Mbalu Fonnie, a licensed nurse midwife was Matron at Kenema Hospitals Haemorrhagic Fevers Unit that had been handling patients infected with Ebola. Sadly, she was infected with Ebola whilst caring for a pregnant Ebola-infected nurse. She died of the disease on July 21st 2014. This exclusive Awareness Times video highlights the impact her death had. Her death (and subsequent July 29th death of Dr. Khan) jolted Government of Sierra Leone which had, on 17th July 2014, called one of its usual press briefings to chastise Awareness Times. On 17th July, then Tourism Minister Peter Bayuku Konteh lectured against alarmist coverage of Ebola outbreak which was scaring tourists and driving investors away. The rest is History. Late Nurse Fonnie had over 30 years experience treating haemorrhagic illness. She started her career at Nixon Hospital in Segbwema, Eastern Sierra Leone where she participated in Lassa research by the CDC of United States. She specialized in management of severe Lassa cases in pregnant women. Many years ago, she had survived a Lassa fever attack and on her recovery, went back to work. This time, she could not survive Ebolas attack. May the soul of Nurse Mbalu Fonnie rest in perfect peace. Amen. Meanwhile, this Awareness-Times video released today is the first of a collection of exclusive, never-before-seen videos which Awareness Times plans to be releasing as the paper keeps the Ebola crisis in perspective - from a contemporary and historical viewpoint. You may freely share this poignant video. (y) (y)
