Students will learn to play interlocking mbira parts and to sing in Shona, the tribal language of Zimbabwe. Emphasis is on playing together, and experiencing the deep complexity and beauty of mbira music. All levels welcome including complete beginners. No musical experience necessary. Please note: Some mbira instruments will be available for use, but please contact Nora in advance at 917-378-0113 to reserve an instrument. About Nora Balaban: Nora Balaban has been a performing musician for over 30 years, focusing on traditional African music. She has lived and performed on both US coasts. In addition to establishing numerous musical groups, she opened and managed Tribal Soundz world music store, in the East Village, selling ethnic instruments and music cd’s while developing an extensive music education program. She spent most of 1996-2000, living in Zimbabwe, training with mbira masters. She has been teaching & playing mbira for 18 years, and presently performs with her two groups, Timbila and mbiraNYC.
