Mecklenburg County Public Schools proudly received an extra special visit this week from a bright entrepreneur, Acacia founder of Tiny Girl Big Dream. Acacia, also known as “Tiny” created her company in the hopes of helping to end bullying and give students a way to spread friendship. She created a friendship bench with the hopes that every school in America and Canada would have a bench. She also created the kindness journal to share and celebrate random acts of kindness as well as the “I Am Amazing” bracelets to remind all children that when you look in the mirror you will see something amazing even with imperfections. Karobway Furniture and Floor Covering along with Discount Furniture Center sponsored this wonderful program for Park View Middle School and South Hill Elementary. When Ernie Thompson and Robert Smith learned about the Friendship Bench, they both thought that this would enhance the Five Habits of Heart and Mind we are developing in our schools. With their support, Acacia was brought to both schools to deliver and unveil the Friendship Bench. At South Hill Elementary, Acacia shared with the younger students about how you can always find someone that shares similarities and enjoys doing some of the same things each child enjoys. These examples included reading, math, and playing sports. At the middle school, her message was very powerful and a peer-to-peer approach. She shared a personal story on how she overcame being bullied by becoming a friend to someone that was hurting on the inside. The Friendship Bench is made from 100% recycled plastic. Each piece is flawed and from a pile of scrap to remind you “we are all flawed and perfectly imperfect” as Acacia shared with the students. Many thanks to our community sponsors and for more information on Acacia visit her website at tinygirlbigdream.org.
